  • FRIDAYS FOR FUTURE

    FRIDAYS FOR FUTURE

In the last Centuries, the North Pole has fascinated scientists, travellers, writers and so on.

It has been the set of intriguing novels, films and documentaries. However, to try to get there, many scouts had died because of the bad weather conditions and the inadequacy of their technological items.

Today mankind is worried about the climatic changes which are causing the dissolution of the Artic polar ice cap. Perhaps in few years’ time we could reach the North Pole navigating without any ice. In fact, scientists are worried because men underestimate the fact that the fracture of polar ice cap is growing dramatically. All this due to an icrease of water emissions, which determines the Greenhouse effect, which in turn is strengthened by the Permafrost.

If the cap keeps on melting, there will be the melting of the ice as consequence but also the disappearance of life. There could also arisen extreme climatic events, the dilution of salt in water and, at the end, the raising of the latter which submerge the coasts and all the surrounding places and villages.

Personally, I hope that people all over the world will realize the danger to prevent any disaster, helping the planet being ecofriendly. For this reason, in these days it was born the young protest of million of teenagers all around the world who with the movement of  Fridays for Future, you can see the Facebook page, claim strict rules to help or our Earth, preventing climatic catastrophes.

    CAPODIMONTE: AN AMUSING SCIENTIFIC EXPERIENCE

The Napoletan Astronomical Observatory  was established by Joseph Bonaparte in 1807, in the ancient monastery of San Gaudioso on the Caponapoli hill. When Joachim Murat was appointed king of Naples, he approved in  1812 the foundation of a new Observatory on the Miradois hill, a site not far from the royal palace of Capodimonte. The astronomer Federigo Zuccari and the architect Stefano Gasse conceived a monumental building in the Neoclassic style, the first to be designed in the capital of the Kingdom of Naples. In 1812 Zuccari established also an astronomical library in San Gaudioso’s Observatory. The collection grew from 195 to 620 books in four years .In the middle of 1815, Ferdinand I of Bourbon  became the king of Naples. He called in Naples the astronomer Giuseppe Piazzi, to supervise the conclusion of building works. The new Observatory was  completed in 1819.

The following are the ideas we collected among us during that amusing experience:

Visiting the Planetarium was amazing, because we saw the stars and planets and we learned something about a Science called  Astrophysics . Our experience was beautiful and interesting.(Katia)

Mr Gino , an Astrophysicist who works there, showed us the Planetarium, a really nice place. It was a cool experience. Everyone  was looking for his zodiac sign, because we saw the sky, its constellation and the stars! (Giuli

Our school trip to the Planetarium was too interesting and fun. We had a nice guide who explained us the  solar system in the magic darkness of the Planetarium. A fantastic Universe with moon, constellation and stars that shine. We saw the sun with a telescope, too. It was really exciting! (Martina)

The Capodimonte Planetarium is one of the most ancient in Europe. It was a pleasure to visit it because there was the help of a kind  guide: Mr Gino. (Fabio)

Visiting the Capodimonte’s observatory was a marvellous experience. The most beautiful thing was the Planetarium. We watched an artificial sky with all the stars, planets and constellations. It was magic.[Arianna e Federica]

We visited the Planetarium, and we used the telescope to watch the sun. But do not do this to   naked eyes because it’s dangerous for your sight!!![Debora)

I liked that experience very much because the Universe and The Astronomy fascinated me.[Luisa]

We need  Science to find out Universe, Earth, Stars and everything around us. Astronomy is Science but also Art. [Alessandra]

Visiting the Capodimonte’s Planetarium was an incredible experience .In this way we understand  the solar system  and what surround us. The Planetarium is fantastic![Martina]

The majesty of the Universe goes above the numbers and their infinity.[Miriam]

  • Bohemian rhapsody

    Bohemian rhapsody

    BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY

Citando una frase del film “Noi siamo leggenda”, possiamo dire che Bohemian Rhapsody è un film superbo sui Queen, diretto da Dexter Fletcher e Brian Singer con un cast di attori di talento come Ramy Malek e Mike Myers.

The film tells the story of the rock band’s first fifteen years, from their birth in 1976 to the LIVE AID, a charity concert held in LONDON in 1985.

The film celebrates also the story of the band’s frontmen: Freddie Mercury, an outlaw artist who became one of the most loved rock singer in the world. The film shows also his human side and his fragility too.

Don’t  stop me know, Radio GAGA,   Under pressure, We are the champions, these and other songs bring the audience into an magical atmosphere full of emotions. The first scenes of the film describes the story of Farouck, Freddie’s real name, a student who attends an Indian British college in London. He has a really  difficult relationship with his family, especially with his father. He also loves rock music and extravagant clothes. One night he meets, after watching them playing, Brian May, Roger Taylor and the bassist Jhon and offers himself to replace their singer. They performed for the first time in a club and the audience went crazy for their music. So they started performing around Great Britain, calling themselves THE QUEEN. Later the band  is discovered by a record company, THE EMY. At the same time Freddie fell in love with a girl, Mary, his greatest MUSE. The Queen started performing in America. In 1975 the band recorded the album A Night at Opera, but the executive Ray Foster refused to publish their six-minutes song Bohemian Rhapsody as a main single. However the song became a great success.  After a few years Freddie moved into a huge house with Paul, his new boyfriend. Then, he began to live without rules, organizing hot party and becoming a drug addict, surrounded by unfriendly persons. At that time he signed a solo contract, but soon he discovered his illness: THE AIDS and he felt ALONE. Convinced by Mary, he decided to apologize for his behaviour and play with his group again. They performed at LIVE AID, becoming a legend. The story is full of sentimentalism but the audience has appreciated this movie. It’ s full of good messages as the importance of friendship and the love for the music but the most important for us is: the freedom to express ourselves trough music. Lately the film received two golden globes . Ramy  Malek is an incredible performer. We ‘re waiting for the Oscar.Quoting some words from the film: ‘’We are all legends”, we can confirm that THE QUEEN  said the truth .

  • FUNNY BRITISH FOOD

    FUNNY BRITISH FOOD

A conferma dei tanti pregiudizi sul cibo in Gran Bretagna , eccovi una lista di orrori inglesi.

If you are a young tourist in the U.K. and you want to save some money, take a risk

and try some of funny British inventions.

Very often British people invent British versions of foreign dishes.

Spaghetti Bolognese (pronounced bolonays) is a favorite meal. It is a combination of overcooked spaghetti with a lot of meat sauce.

You can even buy spaghetti Bolognese in a tin as most Brits do when they don’t have time or they defrost and cook frozen spaghetti in a microwave.

Another favorite dish is “Macaroni Cheese” a sort of pasta cooked in a  Cheesy béchamel sauce. It is possible to enjoy it on a toast.

“Chicken tikka masala” is one of the most popular dishes  in the U.K. The recipe sounds Indian: chicken in a creamy spicy, but many people think it originally comes from Scotland.

On British menus  you can sometimes find very strange combinations “ tandori chicken pizza”, a pizza margherita with sweetcorn, mushrooms and  tandori ( Indian) chicken or “chicken Milanese”: thin pieces of chicken served with “spaghetti napolitana” with tomato sauce.

Of course you can eat delicious traditional British food in some “expensive reastaurants” but you will never taste as good food as you are used to having especially if you are Italian.

  • “Fame”: a timeless musical.

    “Fame”: a timeless musical.

On 13th December of this academic year, a group of students from our school attended the musical “Fame”, held in the “Supercinema” in Castellammare Di Stabia.

The musical is based on the screenplay by Christopher Gore and it’s about a group of American teenagers who attend the prestigious High School of Performing Arts in New York City.

In this school students are divided into three departments: music, drama and dance. They have to study these three disciplines but all of the other ordinary subjects too.

In the drama department Doris Finsecker, Montgomery MacNeil and Ralph Garci are accepted. Doris is a Jewish girl with a low self-esteem, Montgomery is a boy who suffers for his family struggles and his hidden homosexuality and Ralph is a funny guy who entered the drama department after failing music and dance auditions.

In the music department there’s Bruno Martelli, a talented keyboardist who is scared to play his music publicly even if everybody appreciates it.

In the dance department there are Leroy Johnson, who got in even if he was just supposed to help a friend during her audition, Lisa Monroe, who successfully passed her audition but she has no interest in dance, and Coco Hernandez, who is accepted in all of the three departments thanks to her huge talent.

The plot follows each storyline in an engaging way, so that the audience pays attention to the musical and feels involved.

Attending this musical was a chance for us to spend time together, have fun and learn English in a different and effective way.

  • What you have to know about BREXIT.

What you have to know about BREXIT.

On 23 June 2016 a referendum was held to decide whether the UK should remain in the European Union or leave it. More than 30 million people voted and Leave won by 51.9% to 48.1%.

A new word was created – Brexit –, which is a short way of saying, “the UK leaving the EU” by mixing the words Britain and Exit. But what does Brexit actually mean and how will it affect us all?

The European Union is a club of 28 European Countries. Each of these countries pays to be a member and in return, they get access to special ways of working together. This includes being part of a “single market”, which means that countries can trade with one another and people can move around freely – as if we were all living together in one big country.

The EU has its own parliament, laws and currency (the euro – although the UK does not use this as we stuck to our own pounds and pence). The EU was set up after World War 2 with the idea that if countries work together, they are unlikely to go to war again.

The 48 per cent who voted to remain in the EU, including former Prime Minister David Cameron, felt that being a member of a 28-nation club is better than going it alone. They felt it was easier for us to sell things to other EU countries, meaning it was good for businesses and trade.

So why did over half of voters (51.9 %) in the UK want to leave this special club?

The idea of the single market was to increase trade between countries, creating jobs and lowering prices. However, the European Parliament decides on many rules and standards that EU countries have to follow and critics felt that they were losing control of their own affairs and laws.

The UK pays billions of pounds in membership fees to the EU every year and some people felt that they weren’t getting much back in return for this.

Also, many people are moving from poorer countries to richer countries around the world. This has made some people in the UK worry about the free movement rule, which allows people in the EU to move to any other EU country without needing special permission (a visa). This was a key issue for many voters and the Leave campaign won by just 4 per cent.

Will young people still be able to get jobs in Europe?

Britain’s membership of the EU means that citizens are able to live and work anywhere within the 28 countries of the EU and they do not need any special visa.

How will it affect young people wanting to study at universities in Europe?

Some young Britons have responded by choosing to study at significantly cheaper European universities, particularly in the Netherlands and Germany. More than 15,000 British students also study in Europe as part of the Erasmus scheme.

After March 2019, students could still study outside the EU but it may be harder to get visas and fees may be more expensive.

What did Prime Minister Theresa May say to reassure EU citizens?

Prime Minister Theresa May issued a direct appeal to EU citizens living in the UK to stay in the country after Brexit.EU citizens and their family members living in the UK must apply to the for settled status. Settled status means that you can live in the UK for as long as you want. You will have access to public funds and services and you can apply for British citizenship. Any children born in the UK after you get settled status will automatically be British citizens.

She agreed that any EU citizen arriving between March 2019 and 2021 will have a right to residency.

They will get a “lifetime right” to bring in their entire close family, kids, spouse, parents, grandparents – even if they are outside the EU.

They can also bring in their girlfriend or boyfriend – a “durable partner” if they can prove they have been together for two years.

Children born in the UK to parents from the EU will automatically become British citizens.

Irish citizens will not have their rights affected by Brexit and will always be able to live and work in Britain freely.

Will they need visas to work there?

EU citizens will still be able to travel to and live in Britain after Brexit under new immigration plans.

What does this mean for EU citizens living in the UK?

The report confirms that EU and UK citizens have free movement of rights until the day the UK withdraws from the EU – 29 March 2019. This, in effect, is the cut-off date for EU citizens moving to the UK.

Anyone who arrives before Brexit day will have the right to stay.

Those who are yet to be granted permanent residency in the UK will have their rights protected, so they can still acquire it after withdrawal.

EU citizens in the UK will have equal access to social security, health care, education and employment.

But they – and UK citizens in the EU – would lose their rights to residency if they are out of the country for five or more years.

    Passport or not after Brexit?

The UK is still in the EU, but not in the Schengen area, so you will have to show your passport on entry. The fact that you are an EU citizen means that you will not need a visa.

    After 29 March 2019:

    1. You should have at least 6 months left on your passport from your date of arrival. This applies to adult and child passports.
    2. If you renewed a 10 year adult passport before it expired, extra months may be added to your new passport’s expiry date, making it valid for more than 10 years. Any extra months on your passport over 10 years may not count towards the 6 months that should be remaining to travel to most countries in Europe.

  • A model of bravery: Giancarlo Siani.

A model of bravery: Giancarlo Siani.

33 years after his death, people still remember Giancarlo Siani’s bravery. He never kept his mouth shut about what was happening in Torre Annunziata.

The journalist was so determined to discover the truth and he was completely in love with his job. All he wanted was alerting people about organized crime which was involved in politics and in many other fields, but people seemed to reject the truth, they were too scared to pick the right side. But he wasn’t, and he kept on using his job to fight camorra and exposing it.

His voice was too loud in criminals’ opinion, so they decided to shut the truth up and kill him. 10 gunshots in his head and Giancarlo’s life was taken away by the people he’d always tried to stop.

Many years took to arrest the murderers. At first people blamed him, trying to cover the lawlessness of their hometown, but some years later they started facing the truth.

Today young generations are trying to fill in for Giancarlo’s voice, taking him as a model of bravery, standing together against camorra.

  • Naples: babygangs at work

    Naples: babygangs at work

Naples: babygangs at workThe phenomenon of babygangs is spreading all around the city of Naples, in the Southern Italy. These “gangs” are associations of kids pretending to gain respect just showing off their apparent strength. They often share photos of themselves holding a gun or, for example, smoking a joint. The age of these kids is absurd: the youngest ones are even 8 or 9 years old.

The public opinion is shattered and, while some people think that TV series, such as “Gomorra”, inspired by the homonym Roberto Saviano’s book, have a relevant part in the rising of this phenomenon, others just associate these kids’ actions with social emergency.

There have been at least eleven episodes of baby gang violence in the past two months, including the aggression of two teens by a gang armed with chains and the beating of Ciro, a 16-years-old who had his nose broken by a group of youths aged 16-18. Among the victims there is also the 17-year-old Arturo, stabbed a week before Christmas, who has recently returned to school. He was severly injured and partially lost his voice.

Obviously people are trying to figure out how to solve this rising problem. Naples police chief Antonio De Iesu claimed that a deal had just been signed to take 400 kids off the streets and teach them a job.

On the 17th January around 2000 people showed their disappointment and anger for the situation marching in the streets of the city to protest against those attacks. The march took place between the district of Scampia and the metropolitan station of Chiaiano, where last week a 15-years-old boy was hit and injured for no apparent reason and had to have his spleen removed. Mostly students took part of it, but there were also the deputy major of Naples, Raffaele Del Giudice, and the justice undersecretary Gennaro Migliore.

This is the second big manifestation against the baby gang’s violence after the one proposed by Arturo’s school.

Gomorra is not to blame, the State is to blame, read one banner.

Meanwhile police keeps investigating on the aggressions of the last few days and have already arrested 7 kids – 3 of whom are underage. «We might say we’re on the right way – said Marco Minniti, the Minister of the interior – or even already detected culprits of the unacceptable violence of these days».

  • Terror in Westminster Bridge

    Terror in Westminster Bridge

Terrorist attack on Westminster Bridge, five dead

Last 22nd March was a living nightmare for Londoners and tourists.Westminster Bridge

At about 2:40 pm a man bumped into pedestrians over Westminster Bridge by his car, near the Houses of Parliament. He killed three people before crashing the car into the Parliament’s gates. He tried to enter the building, armed with two knives. There he stabbed to death an unarmed police officer. Then the terrorist was shot and killed too by armed police. Police reported at least 50 injured people, including a group of French schoolchildren.

The Isis has recently claimed its responsibility for the attack. It released a statement through the Amaq News Agency calling the attacker “a soldier of Islamic State”.
The terrorist was identified as Khalid Masood, born in Kent on Christmas Day in 1964, living in the West Midlands. He had already been investigated some years ago by MI5 for violent extremism and for assaults. Frank Gardner, a BBC security correspondent, described Masood as a “strange character”. Even locals referred to him as “the vampire” because he usually went out at night and dressed in black. As Khalid Masood couldn’t have acted alone, police had arrested ten people on suspicion of being involved in the preparation of the terrorist attack.

The Prime Minister, Theresa May, said that the attack on Wednesday was “sick and depraved” and she highlighted the fact that Britain was “not afraid” and would stand firm in the face of terror. There would be also more armed and unarmed officers on duty in London and across the country as a “precautionary measure”.

Lots of supportive and compassionate signs has started to become trending on social media, such as the hashtag #WeAreNotAfraid which wants to show that Londoners won’t be discouraged by terrorist attacks. Multiple fundraising pages have also been set up to help the murdered police officer’s family, as well as other victims, raising more than £320,000.

  • USA election: who is Trump?

    USA election: who is Trump?

    Trump

Donald Trump, 70 years old, is the 45th President of the United States. He is the oldest president ever elected surpassing Ronald Reagan, who was 69 years old at his election in 1980. He announced his candidacy for president as a Republican in June 2015. He defeated his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, who would have been the first woman President in 240-year US history. He won 290 Electoral Colleges votes to 232 for Hillary Clinton.

First changes will be felt immediately, because the shift from Barack Obama’s presidency is enormous. As Brian Beutler, a journalist, says in “The New Republic”, Trump will almost certainly abrogate Obama’s international climate agreement and the global powers agreement preventing Iran from creating their own nuclear arsenal. Republicans will send Trump legislation undermining Obama’s legacy everywhere they can find congressional majorities to do so. The Supreme Court will return to conservative control, and over the next four years, it may very well become far more conservative. Voting rights could be further weakened; the constitutional right to abortion is vulnerable to abolition.

All those changes may seem uncomfortable for some, indeed during the voting, people started getting scared when they saw Trump overtaking Hillary Clinton. Some of his supporters celebrated his victory by doing unbelievable things, quoting a gay man having his head smashed by Trump followers. Many protesters have filled streets in midtown Manhattan shouting “Not my president” and violent demonstrations have taken place in lots of other major cities. Furthermore, we have to wait 100 days to let him prove his political program.
